Jason Mewes Sued
Actor Jason Mewes, best known as Jay of Jay and Silent Bob, is being sued by a producer for reneging on a deal for an HBO special.
Producer Craig Veytia is reportedly suing Mewes for backing out on a deal to be featured in a documentary about his battles with sobriety. Rock Bottom, the HBO special slated to air this summer, was to chronicle Mewes’ life in New Jersey. The file would have followed him from nobody to cult-movie star, focus on his heroin addiction, drug-related arrest, and his attempts to get clean. Veytia and crew have been following the actor since March 20 and had tape of Mewes using heroin, suffering withdrawal, and clips of him at his court appearances and in rehab.
Mewes reportedly decided against doing the documentary and has not been cooperating with the producer even though he signed two deals back in March that granted the rights to his life story to Veytia and also made Veytia his personal manager. According to Veytia, earlier this year, getting Mewes to do Rock Bottom required some "friendly persuasion" but Mewes decided to go with the project "to help other people so they don’t fall into the same trap as he did." Friendly persuasion? Hmmm…bet we could probably translate what friendly persuasion really means. It seems highly unlikely that Mewes was thinking correctly when he signed those deals.
Now Veytia is seeking a "court declaration" giving him the legal right to "produce and exploit" Mewes’ life, even fictionalizing some of the actor’s life. If the documentary is ever shown, with or without Mewes’ consent, one has to wonder the effect it may have on the public. Will the kids who watch it make the right decision and "just say no" or will the celebrity aspect of the special have kids thinking drugs are cool? As for Mewes, will seeing himself down and out be enough of a wake up call? Makes you wonder…
