Liza Going Solo
Less than a year and a half after saying "I do," Liza Minelli and David Gest have announced they are separating.
The dynamic and oh-so-believable duo of Minelli and Gest has separated after less than two years of marriage. Hard to believe, eh? Pass the tissues, this is harder to bear than when Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley announced their split. Okay, who did not see this coming? The odd couple met through Michael Jackson (who eventually served as co-best man along with his brother Tito) when Jackson implored Gest to sign Minelli on for his 30th anniversary special. Liza and David met and sparks flew! The two were engaged shortly after and married in March 2002. The marriage was Liza's fourth and Gest's first. The reason for Gest's 48 years of bachelorhood was because he was "focused on his career." Yeah, right!
Lately, Minelli and Gest have been living on opposite sides of the country. Early last week, Liza's rep presented a logical explanation for their living arrangements: "David has been in Hawaii getting their house ready while Liza is in New York recovering from her fall in Italy. They are still together." Not even a week goes by and their separation was announced!
During their blip of a marriage, they signed on to do a VH-1 reality show, announced they were adopting a daughter, Serena (they didn't); had their reality show canceled due to Gest's outrageous behavior; threatened to sue over the demise of the show; got sued by a construction company for lack of payment; and, to top it all off, Liza ended up in rehab. Phew! Exhausting just thinking about it! This marriage was doomed from the start. Liza entered rehab in December 2001 before they were married to kick a painkiller addiction before marrying Gest. No word yet if they are planning on a divorce or if they are trying to work through their troubles. Liza will probably land back in rehab to deal with the break-up while Gest will probably get over it by focusing on his "career."
