Spurs building toward a repeat
Here's a short analysis on the offseason aquisitions of the San Antonio Spurs, and what they need to do to repeat as NBA Champions.
We have heard all of the "lucky" and "fluke" chants that fans over the NBA have been chanting since the Spurs wont the Championship, but this year you had better be thinking of some new ones after you see the new and improved San Antonio Spurs.
It all began when David Robinson retired from the game. All of the Spurs fans cringed at the thought of not having Tom Duncan and Robinson, or "The Twins" on the floor.
Cry no more Spurs fans as Rasho Nesterovic will be your new center.
At 7-0, 248 pounds, Nesterovic not only brings in better rebounding, but he also brings a more durable body.
Stephen Jackson left, now your in trouble.
No problem. The Spurs got into a three-way trade with the Pacers and Kings so that they could acquire Hedo Turkoglu and Ron Mercer, which, in itself, is a huge addition to the Spurs.
First, they add a much better three-point shooter than Jackson in Turkoglu, which adds to their excellent bench scoring.
Second, adding Ron Mercer will vastly improve their defense from last year and also add some versatility, as he can play small forward and shooting guard. Finally, the Spurs can release both of these players at the end of the season and still have cap space for next year.
Speaking of cap space... the Spurs used some of it to sign five-time NBA champion Robert Horry away from the Lakers, which brings some much needed veteran leadership that was lost after the retirement of Robinson.
Horry also brings in his "clutch" three point shooting, which could have been used during last years championship.
The Spurs, who were thought as a pushover before last season, are now a championship team that is ready to repeat.
With the additions of Mercer, Turkoglu, Nesterovic and Horry, the Spurs are definitely ready to take on the Lakers.
Spurs Grade: A
Not only do they get better with their starters, but they also add depth and bench help. The future is definitely looking good as this team has possible championship written all over it for next year.
Next week: An analysis of the Timberwolves offseason.
