Scuffles erupted in the Solomon Islands' capital, Honiara, yesterday over the export of dolphins to Mexican wildlife parks.
Most developed countries have banned the trade in wild dolphins under the convention on international trade in endangered species, but in the Solomons a foreign syndicate is buying animals rounded up by locals.
Police heightened security around the airport yesterday, and two reporters from an Australian paper were arrested photographing a plane collecting a cargo of animals. A New Zealand film crew said their boat driver was beaten up by guards at the weekend while filming a dolphin pen in Honiara.
