Freediving records broken

A British-born diver was celebrating last night after shattering one of the world's most extreme sporting records.

Holding her breath for three minutes and 38 seconds, Tanya Streeter descended 400ft into the ocean and resurfaced under her own power, breaking previous freediving world records for men and women.

"I have proved that freediving can be done safely and responsibly," she said after her feat, which took place in a 7,000ft-deep underwater abyss off the Turks and Caicos Islands yesterday. Streeter, 30, was said to be the only woman in any sport to have exceeded a male counterpart's world record performance.
