Three USA women's beach volleyball teams unbeaten in Norway

Three women's teams from the United States posted unbeaten marks here Thursday during the opening Main Draw rounds of the $360,000 ConocoPhillips Open on the pier courts at Vaagen Harbour in Stavanger, Norway.

While the women were competing in their seventh SWATCH-FIVB World Tour event, the men concluded qualifying for the 32-team Main Draw with the United States' Dax Holdren and Stein Metzger earning a spot in the "money" rounds that start Friday.

The United States' Holly McPeak and Elaine Young, the top-seeded team, scored wins over teams from the Netherlands and Germany to advance to a Friday morning match against 25th-seeded Renata Ribeiro and Shaylyn Bede of Brazil.

Second-seeded Kerri Walsh and Rachel Wacholder and third-seeded Annett Davis and Jenny Johnson Jordan also posted 2-0 marks Thursday while 15th-seeded Carrie Busch and Nancy Mason were eliminated from the Main Draw after dropping matches to Cuba and Finland.

Walsh and Wacholder, who are playing together for the first-time, play 10th-seeded Nila Ann Hakedal and Ingrid Torlen of Norway Friday morning while Davis and Johnson Jordan are challenged by 22nd-seeded Angela Clarke and Kylie Gerlic of Australia. Walsh and Wacholder, who is subbing for Misty May this week, defeated teams from Finland and Cuba while Davis and Johnson Jordan beat tandems from Norway and Greece.

Holdren and Metzger, the top-seeded team in the 46-team men's qualifier, advanced to the men's Main Draw with a 21-14 and 21-10 win over 19th-seeded Andreas Gilbertsson and Robert Svensson of Sweden Thursday afternoon. The United States has already placed three teams in the Main Draw due to their technical entry points - Dain Blanton/Jeff Nygaard, Todd Rogers/Sean Scott and Eric Fonoimoana/Kevin Wong.

The women's final is set for Saturday afternoon while the men's gold match will be played Sunday. Both the women's and men's championship teams will share the $27,000 first-place prizes for each gender.
