The Hobbit - The Secret Cave
A story for LOTR and The Hobbit fans. What dangers will Bilbo now face?
Bilbo and the dwarves were wearily walking through the stuffy, dark jungle when suddenly Bombur stumbled and fell over, what looked like, an enormous tree root.
"Ow! Stupid tree! That hurt! "Bombur cried.
"Oh get up and be quiet ", said Dwalin.
"But I can’t get up. My leg is stuck under the root."
Balin went over to help free his leg, but as he did so Bilbo yelled…
"Stop Balin! Don’t touch him!"
" And why ever not? We can’t just leave him here. And whatever are you pointing at?"
"Balin, look up at the tree!"
Balin looked up, and as he did so he nearly fainted with shock. The tree wasn’t a tree it was an enormous, gigantic huge snake! The dwarves backed away.
The snake lifted Bombur in the air and started to swing him back and fort He started screaming and shouting.
" Get me down! Help! Please help! I don’t want to die!"
As the tail came down Bilbo jumped on and climbed up until he got as near to Bombur as he could. He took out his sword and began to cut through the snakes tail. After what seemed like forever he finally cut though it, and Bombur and Bilbo fell to the ground with a thud. The snake gave a loud roar. The tail grew back to be twice the size it was before. It’s yellow eyes gleaming and its sharp, shiny teeth bared it gave a huge lunge at Bilbo and the dwarves.
"RUN!" Thorin shouted.
They ran as fast as their little legs would carry them, but the snake kept gaining on them. Bilbo turned around, sword in hand; he pushed his sword into the snake. It gave a deafening roar, it swayed on the spot for a few seconds, and then with one last unsuccessful attempt to catch Mr Baggins, it fell to the ground with a sickening thud. Bilbo ran over to the dwarves, who were standing in a near-by cave, watching.
"Whew! That was close," said Bombur "Thank you Mr Baggins.I would have dies without your help."
"Anything for my friends, Bombur."
"Lets rest here for a while then we may continue our journey."
As soon as they had unpacked and sat down they were all fast asleep. All, that is, except for Bilbo. Every time he closed his eyes he saw the horrible vision of the snake. But at last he managed to drift off.
When Bilbo woke, the dwarves were still asleep and it was quite dark, so he got up and collected some sticks from around the cave, found a match in one the bags and began to light a fire, as it was very cold in the jungle at night. He sat gazing into the flames thinking of how much he wanted to go home. I want my cosy bed, he thought." I want to go home. Hobbits are not supposed to go on any strange adventure, or any adventures at th-", Bilbo was suddenly cut short as he heard a soft shuffling sound coming from the back of the cave. He turned and looked around but he saw nothing so he turned back to face the fire. No sooner than he had turned around he heard it again. The same shuffling sound.
"Who…who’s there?" he stammered but the only response was the eerie sound. Bilbo crept over to his bag and took out his torch. He flicked it on and slowly moved the beam of light over the back left hand corner of the cave. There he saw a rat digging at a small hole in the wall. As he crept over to the rat, it scurried past Bilbo, round the fire and out of the cave. He examined the wall and found an outline of a door. There was a small hole in the rock. He pulled at it. The door opened. Bilbo ran awkwardly over to the dwarves.
"Wake up! Wake up!" he cried.
"What is it Bilbo? You look like you’ve seen a ghost," said Dori.
"Come see what I have found".
He literally dragged the dwarves over to the door and explained how he had found it. T hey stood and listened with amazed expressions on their faces.
Suddenly there was a low growl. It came from inside the doorway. So the dwarves and Mr Baggins grabbed their bags and went inside. The walls were slimy and covered with mould. It was musky, damp and dark. The ground was muddy and very slippy. They had walked a short way when they heard another growl. Nearer this time. Although they were very scared they walked on. After a while they came to a corner. They paused for a while and as they were about to step round it they heard another growl. It sounded like it was right around the corner. Plucking up what was left of their courage the stepped around it. There stood a huge dragon. It had enormous wings, a long neck, two glowing eyes and four gigantic claws, with long nails, as sharp as glass. Bombur shrieked. The dragon must have heard because it came bounding towards them. The dwarves scattered, leaving poor Mr Baggins all alone with the dragon.
He took out his sword. As the dragon drew nearer Bilbo got ready to strike but when the dragon got approximately five feet away from him it took a deep breath. Mr Baggins closed his eyes. He was expecting fire to come from the dragon’s mouth but instead all that came out was a long hiss. He opened his eyes and there standing either side of the dragon holding two buckers each was Thorin, Bombur, Dori, Nori, Fili and Kili.
"We found buckets when we ran," explained Thorin.
" Thank you," Bilbo said breathlessly "thank you all very much."
The dragon (looking very confused indeed) lifted a huge claw and swiped it at the dwarves. Once again Bilbo lifted his sword and stabbed the dragon’s claw. It roared in pain and frustration. It lifted his other claw and barley missed Bilbo’s head. He stabbed the claw repeatedly.
The dragon roared again, even louder this time. Now Bilbo saw his chance. He lunged at the dragon and stuck the sword right up through the upper part of its mouth. The dragon instantly fell down dead.
All the dwarves cheered. All Bilbo could do was start at the dragon’s corpse. Thorin went over to Bilbo.
"Well done Bilbo,"he said. "Yet again you have saved us, we are all very grateful."
" Well I’m pretty sure you’d do the same for me", Bilbo said quietly.
" Now we must continue our journey", Thorin boomed. Everyone went quiet. " Thanks to our good friend Bilbo here, we live and I’m sure that you are all very very grateful. Now I would be a very happy dwarf if you would accept this token of my appreciation", Thorin handed Bilbo his sword. " Now I know you have a sword already but that is much too small. This one would be more helpful."
"Th…th…thank you Thorin.I would be honoured to take this sword."
"Good, good! Now let us continue. We still have to climb the Misty Mountains yet."
And with that the dwarves cheered and followed Thorin and Bilbo, (who was still admiring his new sword in shock), past the dragon and out of the cave to face the other dangers that lay hidden in the mountains.
"Ow! Stupid tree! That hurt! "Bombur cried.
