Richard Robbins, a dog owner in New York state, decided that attack was the best form of defence when his Siberian husky, Gina Marie, was set upon by a pit bull terrier while out on a walk at the weekend: he bit the pit bull.

The pit bull, called Dutch, perhaps not surprisingly, bit back, injuring Mr Robbins. Another pit bull belonging to the same owner, Eve (that's the pit bull, not the owner, who is Mary Graham) joined the battle and Mr Robbins was bitten on the head, arms and face. Gina Marie required 100 stitches.

Ms Graham now faces reckless endangerment and assault charges. Dutch is on the animal equivalent of death row. The only winners seem to be the sub-editors.
