Air Conditioner Failure Leads to Deaths of Animals

Twenty-seven parakeets, three guinea pigs, two rats and a hamster recently died after the air conditioner in the pet store in which the animals had been available for purchase stopped functioning.

According to employees of the store, a PETCO Animal Supplies outlet located in Glen Cove, NY, the 33 animals were killed by "stress and heat" while being driven to other PETCO stores in which air conditioners were working.

PETCO is cooperating with animal welfare officials who have begun an investigation of the incident.

"We are deeply distressed with any animal loss...and take prompt and appropriate action," said PETCO spokesperson Dan Cowan.

The only animals still at the store are fish in temperature-controlled tanks and reptiles not adversely affected by heat because they are cold-blooded.

Additional animals will be made available for purchase at the store after the air conditioner is repaired or replaced.
