Horse Racing: With Ryan Moore on board, Mountain High should come good in this afternoon's Princess Of Wales's Stakes. By Ron Cox
Small fields and a lack of pace can combine to turn the form book on its head, as Rajeem showed at Newmarket yesterday and Ryan Moore will need to be on his mettle on Mountain High in this afternoon's Princess Of Wales's Stakes. Moore is on the best horse in the race and the distance and going are ideal. It is up to him to ensure the 12f contest does not turn into a sprint. From what we have seen of Mountain High (3.10), there should be no need to over-do any waiting tactics.
The colt tracked the leaders in the Hardwicke at Royal Ascot before putting in a solid effort which only Maraahel could better. Enforcer made ground on the outside of the field to finish an honourable third, but there is no reason why he should beat Mountain High this time. Bandari, who dropped away in the straight, is becoming increasingly hard to predict.
Road To Love, an all-the-way 3l winner at Sandown on Saturday, was a classic case of a Mark Johnston front-runner being allowed too much rope. Jockey John Egan will surely not be gifted such a lead again in today's Joss Collins Heritage Handicap. Formal Decree (2.35) ran out an impressive 6l winner from Road To Love when they met at Pontefract in June, and Jamie Spencer's mount can overcome a subsequent 11lb rise in the ratings.
Degas Art (1.30), Egan's ride in the opening Bahrain Trophy, should appreciate the step up to 1m5f, judging by his run into fourth spot behind Papal Bull at Royal Ascot.
