Lizzie Grubman: PR Queen Mauls Crowd with Mercedes SUV

Lizzie Grubman, well-known Manhattan publicist and socialite, was involved in an ugly accident at a Southampton club on Sunday.
After apparently arguing with bouncers, Grubman got into her black Mercedes SUV to leave the club. Except that instead of leaving the scene, the big vehicle lurched backwards, through a crowd of club-goers, pinning some to the wall of the establishment and battering others. Said one eyewitness, "There was glass and blood everywhere. These nice young kids were on the floor and we didn’t know what to do."

No one has yet been charged in the incident, and whether Grubman was driving or not is still in question. Sources have reported that two other women got into the vehicle with Lizzie. Further reports suggest that the SUV was stuck in mud and, after trying to rock the car free, the driver hit the gas with the vehicle mistakenly engaged in reverse, resulting in the terrible accident. While those at the club reported 12 injured as a result of the gaffe, the official report from Suffolk county police notes that 16 were injured.

The accident has become a nightmare for the socialite, and her lawyer, Edward Burke Jr., has refused to comment on the incident. A spokesperson for Grubman reported that it was "an accident. She stepped on the gas instead of the brake. Fortunately, no one was seriously hurt." The spokesperson later tried to rescind those comments, noting that they were incorrect. What remains to be seen now is the treatment Lizzie receives. Many expect the wealthy Grubman to get off with a "slap on the wrist."

Lizzie Grubman, because of her connections and wealth, will probably not pay very dearly for her poor judgment. Should new laws be instituted to take such advantages away from the wealthy and well-connected?
