Wendy Richard | Kenneth Williams | Hattie Jacques | Johnny Depp | Terry Zwigoff | Laurent Graff | James Meek | Paul McKenna | Paul McCartney...By Martin Wainwright
Hey, we're going to miss those cardigans. Wendy Richard leaves EastEnders at Christmas in what is promised to be "dramatic style". Her character, Pauline Fowler, will vanish two months short of her 22nd on-screen birthday, a TV life that included having baby Martin at 40 and all the usual shenanigans with Dirty Den. Real life included an MBE that owed something to her previous life as the lovely Miss Brahms in Are You Being Served, not to mention Miss Willing in Carry on Matron with Kenneth Williams

Pirates are supposed to take other people's money but Johnny Depp has shifted the practice to a new dimension. Captain Kidd, Henry Morgan and Anne Bonny combined wouldn't have enough galleons to ferry away all his latest film's loot. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men's Chest has broken a financial record every day since its release. Meanwhile Depp has nabbed Terry Zwigoff of Bad Santa to direct Happy Days, a film of French writer Laurent Graff's novel. Other possible projects include The People's Act of Love, by Guardian writer James Meek
Hypnotist Paul McKenna is playing a new venue this week, the high court, where his libel action against journalist Victor Lewis-Smith and the Daily Mirror comes to trial. The man with supposed power over our minds has hired Desmond Browne QC to put his complaint to Mr Justice Eady, who is hearing the case without a jury because mountains of paperwork are involved. The issue centres on McKenna's academic credentials from a US "university" which was later exposed as the offspring of a spurious "council for post-secondary Christian education" invented by American fraudster Thomas Kirk. McKenna is expected to give evidence today.
Franz Ferdinand's Alex Kapranos and Nick McCarthy are doing their bit for the next generation of songwriters with a gig - talking not singing - at the Edinburgh festival. They will tell the great jamboree's books offshoot how they thought up the words of Jacqueline, Do You Want To et al, and got them down in the right, catchy order. The event is for young people only, with tickets available by ballot from www.edbookfest.co.uk, If you miss out, how about bidding for Paul McCartney's first guitar instead? The Rex acoustic comes with a letter of authentification from Macca saying "It belonged to my old school pal Ian James." It's up at Cooper Owen's auction on July 28 at Abbey Road Studios in London.
