Defending champion Venus Williams overwhelmed fellow American Lisa Raymond 6-1, 6-2 with another display of power tennis to claim her place in the quarter-finals.

Williams is chasing a third consecutive women's title at the All England Club and, despite a spirited challenge from Raymond, the world No.1 simply had too much power for the doubles specialist.

Watched by her mother Oracene, Venus broke Raymond in the fourth game of the first set to go 3-1 up and raced away to win it in less than 20 minutes.

The second set was almost as brief, with Venus breaking her opponent's serve on a second break point to lead 2-1. The best 28-year-old Raymond could manage was to fend off another break in game five.

Williams now plays unseeded Russian Elena Likhovtseva in the quarter-finals after she put out 19th seed Magdalena Maleeva in straight sets.

Results

1-Venus Williams (U.S.) beat 16-Lisa Raymond (U.S.) 6-1, 6-2

Elena Likhovtseva (Russia) beat 19-Magdalena Maleeva (Bulgaria) 6-3 6-4
