Orienteering and Land Navigation: Orienteering Adventures Throughout the World

A fun, healthy and entertaining way to familiarize yourself with the outdoors is to grab a map and a compass, head out to the woods and try your hand orienteering.
As city life becomes ever more the norm, it is only natural that there are many people who seek to occasionally re-discover the charm of the wilderness. And one way to do this is give orienteering a go. Not only does it offer some good exercise and afford the orienteerer with the opportunity to "get back to nature", but it is also good fun. Trying to conquer a landscape armed only with some basic old-fashioned implements also makes one feel as though he is discovering nature in a time long before complex highway systems and satellite navigation became the order of the day. In short, orienteering can make one feel like a bit of an explorer, himself.

Whether you are a beginner and almost regardless of which outdoor environment you chose to orienteer in, there are groups throughout North America which offer organized orienteering to suit just about anyone. Beginners can chose simple paths to follow and for the more advanced and adventurous, the corresponding opportunities are available. Also, while most orienteering is done while walking, there are even some orienteering exercises in which one can participate on cross-country skis or from within a canoe.

A good place to begin learning about orienteering is the Internet, which offers a wealth of information on all sorts of orienteering adventures throughout the world. Also available is information on who is organizing orienteering in your area and how you can get involved and participate. In short, if you want to learn about orienteering and perhaps even to participate, you ought to be little more than a mouse-click (and some motivation) away.
