Waske Brings Nadal Run to an End

Tennis: Newly-crowned French Open champion Rafael Nadal crashed out of the Gerry Weber Open at the hands of wildcard Alexander Waske.
Newly-crowned French Open champion Rafael Nadal crashed out of the Gerry Weber Open at the hands of wildcard Alexander Waske.

Waske prevailed 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 after one hour and 51 minutes to end Nadal's 24-game winning streak in the first round.

German Waske broke Spaniard Nadal's serve in the last game of the second set and then in the eighth game of the third set.

Nadal did not look the same on grass after putting together his winning streak on his favourite red clay surface.

If Nadal had reached the semi-finals of the pre-Wimbledon event, he could have faced world No1 Roger Federer of Switzerland, who he beat in the French Open at the same stage.
