Weary

Why grandparents are often very tired... raising grandchildren is hard when you hit the age of retirement.
I’m tired and I am weary.
My eyes are red, swollen and dry…
Too exhausted to shout, too weak to cry.

I have given and given.
I have heard all your selfish, self-serving needs,
Don’t come to me any more with those pleas.

Just leave me in peace.
Let me sally forth for the days I have left.
Don’t cry when I’m gone, you’ll not be bereft.

The time to help has now passed by.
You wasted the time that we could have shared.
You never let you mother know you truly cared.

I am raising your children…
With no assistance or monetary aid from either of you,
Just leave me alone as you have always seemed to do.

Let me go my own way.
Don’t cry and wail when I leave this vale of tears,
Remember you hastened the end of my years.

The manners I taught you…
Were soon all forgotten. No thanks, no offers of praise
Leave me alone for what is left of my days.
