Uncle Jonathan Bush Defends His Young Nieces
Jonathan Bush, brother of Dubya’s dad, has defended the Bush twins and is outspoken in his condemnation of the current "legal" drinking age.
Bush, a resident of Haven, Connecticut has recently declared that the ban on drinking under the age of 21 is "the worst law in the books." After the recent brouhaha over his nieces’ trouble with the law over the issue, Bush wrote to his friend William O’Shaughnessy, owner of radio stations throughout the country. O’Shaughnessy has since refused to allow stories about the 19-year-old twins to air on his multiple stations.
Meanwhile, uncle Jonathan continues to be a high-profile critic of what he refers to as "Prohibition." Claims Jonathan Bush, "The reason for the 21-year-old drinking law is to cut down on drunken-driving accidents. The way to cut down on these accidents is to make the penalty so stiff that people will not drive while intoxicated. The 21-year-old law should be changed to 18." Bush has also noted that the current law "is Prohibition, and, as we saw in the 20s, Prohibition does not work."
Ironically, the twins’ father, the current President Bush and then governor, signed the Texas bill that kept the legal drinking age at 21. President Bush has remained mum on the subject, while letting Jonathan speak out on behalf of 18-20 year olds everywhere.
