A long forehand from Davenport goes uncalled, much to Clijsters's disgruntlement, but she finds her way to taking the game eventually.

Davenport leads 6-3, *2-1 Two long forehands from Davenport at the baseline put the pressure back on her, and when Clijsters wellies it out wide on the forehand she's three break points down. Some incredibly powerful serving - and she's picking out Clijsters's forehand for special attention - sees her to deuce though, and it's pinpoint serving that gets her safe.

Davenport leads 6-3, 1-1* Davenport is getting a huge 80% of her first serves in, while Clijsters is making only 70% - not that you'd know it with a bullet down the middle of the court to take her to 40-0. Holds.

Davenport leads 6-3, *1-0 Fantastic shot from Clijsters in the face of a frankly terrifying onslaught from her not inconsiderably-sized opponent, sending a forehand dead straight along the line as Davenport looks on. But once again the American comes good on the serve to stay on course for the quarter-finals.

Davenport wins first set 6-3 Davenport just - just - finds the line with a backhand return to really put pressure on Clijsters, then turns the screws with a perfectly timed forehand return that swings across the Belgian.

First set: Clijsters 3-5* Davenport What you don't want, at 4-3 up, is to serve up a double fault, and then stand motionless as a Clijsters backhand whistles into your side of the court. Luckily for Davenport, her opponent takes pity and hammers a couple of forehands long and wide. Ooh, and a fantastic, delicate little backhand volley into the corner to make it 5-3.

First set: Clijsters *3-4 Davenport Beautiful forehand from Davenport, rolling it out towards the tramline, and when she comes into the net there's a lovely volley at the end of it. Her return of serve at break point isn't brilliant, but Clijsters races onto it a little too enthusiastically and wallops it wide.

First set: Clijsters 3-3* Davenport The crowd on Centre Court looks rather portly and, from the crimson shimmer that issues forth, appears to be cooking in its own sweat. On court, meanwhile, Clijsters makes a great pass down the line, but when Davenport keeps her at the baseline, she's looking a little short of options.

First set: Clijsters *3-2 Davenport Even on Clijster's serve Davenport's making sure she's first into the net and getting the Belgian's legs moving. But she's no match for a couple of hefty serves and things stay on serve.

First set: Clijsters 2-2* Davenport Davenport, who we know isn't exactly a fan of running herself, takes up a position at the middle of the service line and works Clijsters all over the court. Big fat serve to finish things off, too.

First set: Clijsters *2-1 Davenport This match is littered with more mistakes than Shane Ritchie's career. Just when you think Clijsters has taken hold of things with a solid smash, she flings a backhand into the net then serves about three feet wide. Awful cross-court forehand from Davenport sees her right.

First set: Clijsters 1-1* Davenport After that off-key start, Clijsters creates a couple of break points of her own [Davenport lazily deciding not to chase a great lob helped]. The first few are saved on the serve by the American, but Clijsters levels things up with a deep forehand at Davenport's feet.

First set: Clijsters *0-1 Davenport Have Clijsters's thighs always looked like ham joints or has she been beefing up? Either way, it's not done her a great deal of good, a couple of dreadful forehands handing Davenport break points, and another hands her the game. Oh dear.

Preamble The players are knocking up now, and for the gamblers among you, Lindsay Davenport is evens to win here, while Kim Clijsters is 8/11 - which is almost tempting, given that Davenport hasn't really faced a real test here yet.
