USA's McPeak & Youngs to play for German medal

Holly McPeak and Elaine Youngs are the last players standing for the United States in the $600,000 Smart Grand Slam as they will team together on Saturday in the "final four" of the women's Beach Volleyball competition at the FIVB tournament in Berlin, Germany.

With third-seeded McPeak and Youngs splitting a pair of matches as the only American women's team Friday, all four United States men's were eliminated by losing four of five matches. McPeak and Youngs will play the second semifinal match Saturday against 12th-seeded Dalixia Fernandez Grasset and Tamara Larrea Peraza of Cuba.

Ninth-seeded Suzanne Lahme and Danja Müsch of Germany challenge top-seeded Adriana Behar and Shelda Bede of Brazil in Saturday's first semi-final. The final two teams will play for the $43,000 first-place prize later Saturday.

Eric Fonoimoana and Kevin Wong was the United States' only winning men's team Friday by opening with a win over a team from Australia before being eliminated by an Argentina tandem. Seeded 12th, Fonoimoana and Wong shared $7,000 for a 13th-place finish.

Placing 17th for the United States were 10th-seeded Todd Rogers/Sean Scott and 19th-seeded Dain Blanton/Jeff Nygaard as both teams earned a $5,000 paycheck. Dax Holdren and Stein Metzger placed 25th for the United States to share $4,000 as the 15th-seeded team.

Top-seeded Misty May and Kerri Walsh forfeited two matches after winning their opening game in the double-elimination event to place 17th to share $5,000. The teams of Annett Davis/Jenny Johnson Jordan and Nancy Mason/Carrie Busch placed 13th to share $7,000 for the United States.
