Clay vs. Ruben Rematch
American Idol winner Ruben Studdard is now feeling the heat from his competition, Clay Aiken, in the ratings race.
Studdard may have been the winner with the call-in voters, but Aiken is shakin' up the pop chart. The polar opposites seem pretty good-natured about the competition – so far. They both definitely have been enjoying the publicity. Both Aiken and Studdard now have "spokespeople" and have quickly gotten assimilated to a more high-profile lifestyle. Aiken actually has two publicists and a bodyguard.
With the release of dueling singles, Aiken has taken the lead in the second round of "Ruben vs. Clay." His single "This is the Night" coupled with his version of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" has sold a reported 393,000 and debuted at the top of Billboard's 100. Last year's American Idol, Kelly Clarkson, only sold 236,000 copies of "A Moment Like This." Lagging behind, only slightly, is Studdard's "Flying Without Wings" and "Superstar" release sold 286,000 copies landing him in spot #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Now they are both slated to release debut albums on August 19. So far the score is tied 1-1. Next up we will see who wins the battle of the debut albums. Seems that even though Aiken was not picked as our "American Idol" he hasn't gotten a bad rap so far. Ruben got a $1 million recording contract. Clay got a contract with RCA.
Original American Idol finalists Kelly Clarkson and runner-up Jason Guarini's musical hit the big screen Friday. They play a couple of kids who fall in love at the beach and sing and have organized dance routines. Yeah, it worked for Grease, but the buzz surrounding From Justin to Kelly doesn't seem that great. We'll see how that pans out for them. As for Clay and Ruben, I don't think the "star-crossed lovers" routine will be the way to go on the big screen. The two had said they'd like to do a Laurel and Hardy-esque type of flick. Can’t hardly wait…
