Formula One: Alonso Leaves It Late

Fernando Alonso responded to Michael Schumacher's early pace in Montreal with a flying last-minute lap in second practice.
Fernando Alonso responded to Michael Schumacher's early pace in practice for the Canadian grand prix with an impressive late lap yesterday in Montreal.

Schumacher was the fastest race driver in first practice but the world champion Alonso usurped his rival in the second session with a last-minute flier.

BMW Sauber's test driver Robert Kubica was the man to beat in both sessions although his lap of 1min 16.965sec in second practice was fractionally slower than his morning effort.

Alonso muscled into the top three in his Renault, ending the second session on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve only 0.130sec down on Kubica.
