Mauresmo Untroubled By Perry
Tennis: Third seed Amélie Mauresmo took just 58 minutes to see her way past Shenay Perry and into the fourth round, winning 6-0, 6-2.
Amélie Muaresmo took no more than an hour to book herself a spot in the fourth round, defeating Shenay Perry, ranked 159, 6-0, 6-2.
The scoreline hides the fact that the No3 seed took a while to find her best form in this match, battling the winds gusting in and around court 13 and serving up as many double faults as aces. After breaking the American in the first game, she had to save three break points herself.
In Perry though, she had an opponent weak enough to storm into a comfortable lead before getting into her groove and replacing erring forehands with some delightful groundstrokes, sending Perry all over the court and exposing a weak backhand that will cost her opponent if left untended.
After some initial frustrations, Perry began to put up more of a fight, threatening to put pressure on Mauresmo's serve before finally holding her serve to make it 2-1 in the second set to warm applause from the crowd.
On reflection this was a runaway win for the Frenchwoman but she didn't take the easy route - spurning seven break points before finally breaking for 5-2 and the chance to serve for the set.
She will face either Silvia Farina Elia or Elena Likhovtseva in the fourth round.
Elsewhere in the women's singles tournament, No6 seed Elena Dementieva, of Russia, beat USA's Mashona Washington 7-5, 6-1.
Magdalena Maleeva beat Italian Antonella Serra-Zanetti 6-3, 6-2.
And Britain's Jane O'Donoghue suffered her second defeat in two days, Els Callens and Emmanuelle Gagliardi defeated her and doubles partner Elena Baltacha 6-1, 6-2 in the second round.
