Captain Jerry
Jerry Jones bought the Dallas Cowboys and named himself general manager. If you bought the Titanic, could you make yourself the captain?
Living here in Dallas and watching the whole "Jerry Jones" saga from begining to present, I think I know how it must have been for a passenger on the great ship know as "Titanic". I was sensing that something wasnt right, but I think I just found some broken pieces of an iceberg on deck. Maybe a closer look at our fearless captain are in order.
Did Captain Jerry work his way up through the ranks? Did he start as a cabin boy learn the ship and the sea all his life untill he was made captain? The answer is no, he bought the ship and named himself captain. Now Captain Jerry did not earn all that money by being stupid. He went out and hired the best first officer available. The great ship and crew blossomed into the best luxury liner on the seven seas. It looked to be unsinkable. Then the mutiny happened. First officer Jimmy Johnson, jumped ship. Something to do with Captain Jerry not feeling he was getting enough of the credit for the teams success, (but thats another story.) Let's judge Captain Jerry, not by how he got the job of general manager, but by how he has performed in that role. Let's judge him by four major categories, Financial (cap management), talent evaluation, (draft, free agency agency), Coaching, and the won and lost record.
Financial: the Cowboys will be paying out 23 million in "dead money", that's payments to players who will not be even wearing a Cowboys uniform next year. Why are all these rats running to the back of the boat? Talent Evaluation; Captain Jerry's Last four drafts speak for themselfs. Can a team survive hitting on one or two picks out seven each year? On free agency he has done some good and some bad, lets call this a wash. Coaching; Jimmy Johonson, Barry Switzer, Chan Galie and Dave Campo. If you watched any of the games last season then you know that this list is about to expand. Did this boat just shimmy? Won and lost record: 29-35 since 1997, last playoff win in 1996. I could go on with this, but you get the picture...and besides, I need to go count the lifeboats.
