Schumacher safety blunder
Michael Schumacher is on course for a ritual humbling next Tuesday when he attends the announcement of the latest road car safety crash tests in Cologne on a "special invitation" from the FIA president Max Mosley.
The four-times champion faces the acute embarrassment of endorsing the latest Mercedes C-class saloon which will become the second car to take a five-star Euro ENCAP safety rating.
The Fiat and Ferrari PR departments are hardly delighted that one of their drivers has been roped in to promote a rival make and their regard for the FIA could plummet on Wednesday when it deliberates the Austrian grand prix where Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello reversed positions on the run-up to the chequered flag to gift the German victory.
· The men's long jump champion at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester is unlikely to be overwhelmed when he is given his gold by Simon Thomas, a Blue Peter presenter. The BBC children's television personality has been deemed more suitable to present the medals than the former Olympic champion long jumper Lynn Davies or former European gold medallist Jean Pickering.
