Great Britain's Anne Keothavong surged into the second round, defeating Australian Nicole Pratt 6-3, 6-1.

France's Emilie Loit has become the first seeded player to be eliminated from this year's Wimbledon. The 28th seed was comprehensively beaten 6-1, 6-2 by Russia's Tatiana Panova

Veteran Martina Navratilova rolled back the years, ruthlessly demolishing Catalina Castona 6-0, 6-1 in just 46 minutes to move swiftly into the second round.

The 47-year old nine-times champion, playing in a Wimbledon singles match for the first time in 10 years, showed no mercy on court two against her Colombian opponent, 23 years her junior.

Following a short rain interruption, Castona avoided a whitewash by winning the 12th game, but Navratilova wrapped up an impressive victory in the next game.

Women's singles, first round:

Tatiana Panova (Rus) bt Emilie Loit (Fra) 6-1, 6-2

Martina Navratilova (USA) bt Catalina Castano (Col) 6-0, 6-1

Vera Zvonareva (Rus) bt Samantha Stosur (Aus) 6-4, 6-4

Teryn Ashley (USA) bt Tina Pisnik (Slo) 2-6, 6-1, 7-5
