Ancient Cities and Ruins: Ancient Civilizations Still Exist Today for us to Gaze Upon and Learn From

From urban planning to education to military strategy to architecture, there are still many useful things that we today can learn from ancient civilizations.
The ancient Egyptians mounted massive obelisks of solid stone without the use of technologies that we today would need to perform the same task; the ancient Athenians developed a complex social structure based on pure participatory Democracy; the ancient Romans managed their empire with a level of organization never again paralleled by any society on Earth; and the ancient Chinese developed a quasi-religious system of ethics that is still at the very cutting edge of spiritual practices. Indeed, much as we have achieved in the last few centuries, our ancient forbears still deserve our respect for their developments (from which we have borrowed liberally) and also our research, for there are yet certain things they did that still seem well beyond our grasp.

Many living testimonies to the greatness of some ancient civilizations still exist today for us to gaze upon and learn from. From China to Italy to Peru, the clues left behind about the lives of those gone long before us still exist for us to study and enjoy and many of these places are - rightfully - very popular tourist destinations. Precisely because there is such a mystique to the unknown, we are fascinated by the temporal displacement of thousands of years and when gazing upon ancient ruins, we wonder whether we can ever truly imagine what it was like to have lived at a certain time in the past.

Yet, according to the histories of the past left behind for posterity, it seems that people have always been - so to speak - people and, therefore, we probably can vaguely imagine a life lived some thousands of years ago. But it is very likely "because" this notion can only be so vaguely realized that we are so drawn to the remnants of the past.
