New Challenge Cup

After over 100 years, the Challenge Cup needed a bit of a touch up. Rugby League's largest and most prestigious event had its new trophy revealed today in Edinburgh.
The RFL have unveiled the brand new Challenge Cup to replace the original trophy. The original trophy, made in 1896 in Bradford, had become brittle and metallurgical "tired" after over a century of been handled by winning cup teams.

The new trophy, which took around 800 hours to make, and weighs 8.5 kilograms looks similar to the old one in the basic design, however, now has extra space for about 40 years of future winners, and is far stronger than the previous trophy.

RFL chairman Sir Rodney Walker said: "There are few sporting trophies in the world that attract so much passion, commitment, romance and history than the Rugby League Challenge Cup."

"Rest assured the 'old' cup is going to be in safe-hands for the league's board of directors have decided that it will become the centrepiece in the proposed Museum of Rugby League."

The new trophy will be presented at next years Challenge Cup final in Scotland, and was revealed today in Edinburgh Castle.

The Challenge Cup is England's second largest football event, following the FA Cup. The event consists of teams from all over England, Ireland, Wales, Scotland and France.
