John Travolta: "Swordfish" Tops Weekend Box Office, Edging Out "Shrek"

The new thriller "Swordfish," starring John Travolta, was popular enough with movie-goers to debut as the weekend’s top film, edging out "Shrek."
Travolta, whose up and down career has been nothing short of amazing, is certainly happy with the success of his latest film, especially after his previous two efforts, "Battlefield Earth" and "Lucky Numbers," resulted in box office flops. Though it doesn’t promise to reach the cult fame of Travolta’s "Pulp Fiction," "Swordfish" did bring in $18.4 million in its first weekend and was the actor’s third best debut ever, behind "Face/Off" and "The General’s Daughter."

While "Swordfish" received generally bad reviews from critics and was not expected to be a great success among those predicting the box office take, the movie’s successful weekend was firmly in line with this year’s overall increase in box office revenues, which have seen a 9.5% increase over last year.

Among the other high grossing movies of the weekend were "Shrek," which grossed $17.1 million, and "Pearl Harbor," which drew $14.9 million.
