Asafa Powell has equalled his own 100 metres world record of 9.77secs at the British Grand Prix in Gateshead.
Powell set the record in Athens last June, only to see it equalled by American Olympic champion Justin Gatlin in Doha earlier this year.
The 23-year-old Jamaican said: "I came out here to show them I'm back to where I started last year and I'm going to pick up this season from now on."
Gatlin was meant to run in the same event but withdrew. When asked if he had a message to his rival, Powell said: "That's how you run a world record.
"I can run as fast as I want, when I want. I told them I would do my best here and I didn't let them down.
Behind him there was also an excellent run from from Britain's Dwain Chambers, who was making his first competitive appearance following his two-year drugs ban.
The 28-year-old Londoner finished third, just behind last summer's world championship silver medallist Michael Frater, in a time of 10.07secs.
