Terry's Chances Fade

John Terry looks at have lost his battle to be fit for Sunday, and Ledley's already dialling home with the good news.
John Terry's race for match fitness ahead of England's Euro 2004 opener with France looks to have failed, with Ledley King ready to step in and partner Sol Campbell.

Coach Sven-Goran Eriksson had wanted the Chelsea defender to return to full training today to prove he was fit to face Thierry Henry on Sunday, but Terry managed only a light jogging session and a pre-training kickabout before working individually with physio Gary Lewin.

Eriksson will make a formal announcement at a lunchtime press conference, but an FA spokesman said this morning: "John is taking part in warming-up exercises with the rest of the squad but will then break off to carry on the final part of his own rehabilitation programme while the rest of the squad continue with full training."

If, as it seems, Terry is forced to miss out in Lisbon, early favourite Jamie Carragher looks to have fallen behind King as Eriksson's favoured replacement.
