The five-year-old girl killed when a helium balloon broke loose in a storm at a British army fair in Germany was named yesterday as Isobel Callaghan.

Her father, Robert, 40, a corporal in 35 Engineer Regiment of the Royal Engineers, her mother, Hannalore, and younger brother, Stuart, four, were being comforted by friends and counsellors.

Cpl Callaghan was serving at Sennelager in western Germany and is originally from Chester.

In the accident, in Rheindahlen on Sunday afternoon, the balloon's mooring ropes were ripped from the ground in a freak storm. One rope twisted around the girl's arm and carried her more than 40 miles before she fell.

An army spokesman, Alan Patterson, said: "The family are still in the care of the military police and very distressed by what has happened. They are being looked after by specialist counsellors."
