Winona Ryder Repeat Offender?
Prosecutors claim to have evidence that Winona Ryder's alleged shoplifting spree at Saks last December was not her first.
This information comes on the heels of speculation that she and her defense team are sabotaging her court dates. The latest hearing, which had been postponed four times at the request of Ryder’s defense team, was delayed again last week after she required medical attention when she was hit in the arm by a paparazzo’s camera. Mark Geragos, Ryder’s attorney, later reported that Ryder’s arm had been broken. Reportedly prosecutors told Newsweek and the New York Daily News of evidence that this is not the first time Ryder has shoplifted. She has never before been charged and has no record, but they are hoping to use the evidence to further help their case against the 30-year-old actress. Geragos maintains Ryder’s innocence, although he has not commented on the latest allegations. He states that he will produce receipts for all the items allegedly shoplifted as well as a prescription for the painkillers.
Ryder was arrested in December on four felony counts after her alleged shoplifting spree at Saks Fifth Avenue on Wilshire Boulevard. The actress was arrested December 12 after allegedly shoplifting approximately $5,000 in clothing and accessories. Clerks at the store reported seeing her stuffing the clothing and accessories into her purse after removing the price tags from the items. A security tape allegedly shows Ryder using a pair of scissors to remove a sensor tag from an expensive handbag. At the time of her arrest she was in possession of the painkiller, oxycodone, without a prescription.
Ryder, who has until recently been out of the Hollywood limelight, makes a comeback with two back to back movies, Mr. Deeds debuting June 28 and Simone opening August 16. She has also used her shoplifting incident as a source of humor. She mocked her arrest by wearing a "Free Winona" tee shirt on the cover of W magazine and also spoofed the charges on a recent episode of Saturday Night Live. It has been rumored that some top Hollywood actors do not agree with the humor, said that she was "odd" and that the arrest only "confirmed her sinking status in Hollywood." Ouch!
