Cricket: Middlesex Claim First Win
Middlesex picked up their first win of the season as Kevin Pietersen was denied a half century for Hampshire in the C&G Trophy match.
Kevin Pietersen was stumped for 43 in Hampshire’s C&G Trophy match at Uxbridge yesterday and his dismissal tilted the match the way of Middlesex, who recorded a first win of the season in all competitions and at the fifth attempt.
Hampshire, set 255 to win, were on 142 for five when Pietersen missed a legside ball, toppled slightly and Ben Scott broke the wicket. Shaun Udal chipped in with 32 but was last man out with the visitors 14 short in the final over.
Alastair Cook hit an unbeaten 91 from 106 balls against Ireland at Chelmsford as Essex made 193 and coasted to an eight-wicket win with six overs to spare.
Derbyshire beat Leicestershire by five wickets to maintain their 100% record in the Northern Conference. They restricted the visitors to 188 for six in a game reduced to 45 overs a side and reached a D/L-revised target of 190 with Chris Taylor again passing 50.
Durham’s 66-run victory over Warwickshire made it two wins from two in a match reduced to 36 overs a side. The visitors were all out for 158 with Paul Collingwood taking one for 21 and Liam Plunkett one for 51.
Corey Richards hit an unbeaten 88 as Scotland managed an eight-run win over Worcestershire at the Grange in a match reduced to 25 overs a side. Richards and his fellow Australian Ian Moran (42) helped the Scots recover to 187 for six and the visitors fell just short although Graeme Hick made an unbeaten 50. Yorkshire’s match against Nottinghamshire was abandoned.
South Africa beat New Zealand by four wickets in the third Test at The Wanderers to take the series 2-0. Chasing 217, they reached 130 for one when Graeme Smith (68) was caught behind off James Franklin, who finished with three for 67, and were reduced to 180 for five before Ashwell Prince produced an unbeaten 43. England A completed a 10-wicket win over the Sri Lankans at Worcester on Saturday.
In the County Championship Warwickshire beat Nottinghamshire and Sussex defeated Yorkshire in the First Division while Derbyshire saw off Glamorgan in the Second thanks to a career-best six for 25 from Steffan Jones.
