Motor Racing: Andretti's Grandson Pipped for Historic Indy 500 Win
In a thrilling finish Sam Hornish Jr beat Marco Andretti to the line in an incredible end to the 2006 Indianapolis 500.
Marco Andretti, the 19-year old grandson of the US motor racing legend Mario Andretti, came within half a car's length of making history on Sunday when he was beaten to a first-time victory in the Indianapolis 500. Andretti, whose grandfather won the race in 1969 and went on to win the 1978 formula one world championship, led on the final straight in his Dallara-Honda only for Sam Hornish Jr to surge past. Michael Andretti, Marco's father, finished a close third ahead of Britain's Dan Wheldon, the reigning Indy Racing League champion. "I knew I was quicker than dad," said Andretti. "But [Hornish] he just had that speed. I don't know where it came from."
