Madonna Hits the Stage
Madonna made her London stage debut Thursday in Up For Grabs by Australian playwright David Williamson to lukewarm reviews.
Up For Grabs was to originally be set in Australia but was moved to the New York art scene before being offered to Madonna. Madonna plays a SoHo art dealer who will do anything to sell a Jackson Pollock painting for $20 million. She will do anything, including kissing a female client, who is bisexual.
The opening sold out days in advance and the $55 dollar tickets were being scalped for $500 and up. While fans embraced Madonna’s performance, reviewers weren’t so appreciative. The Daily Telegraph stated, "In the final analysis Madonna strikes me as being about as good as the play –OK but hardly sensational." The Guardian read, "Instead of an implacably driven heroine, one simply finds an amiably smiling girl in silver top and black slacks. The voice is light and…not always easily audible. And the hands flail around like those of a traffic cop…Madonna is not positively bad; just technically awkward." Sting told reporters, "She was wonderful."
It has been reported that Madonna will produce a film titled Like A Virgin. Madonna’s production company, Maverick Films, has reportedly hired filmmaker Darren Stein to write and direct the film about a girl who unexpectedly becomes a media star after launching a "back-to-virginity" campaign at her high school. No word yet on whether or not Madonna will act in the movie, but it is assumed she will sing the title song off the soundtrack. She recently signed on to sing the title song for the next James Bond flick, titled tentatively Bond 20 which is set to premier around the holidays.
