Serena Williams made a colourful start to her French Open campaign as she breezed past Slovakian Martina Sucha 6-3 6-0 in the first round today.

Williams, who accepted a request from her sponsors Puma to wear the green and yellow colours of the Cameroon World Cup team, overwhelmed Sucha with some brutal groundstrokes.

Having secured the break in the fourth game with a blistering backhand down the line, Williams ran away with the opening set in just 34 minutes.

The 39th ranked Sucha, who reached the second round on her Roland Garros debut last year, simply wilted in the second set.

Meanwhile, any hopes Anna Kournikova had of breaking her tournament duck were quickly dashed by the unseeded Australian Christina Wheeler who dumped the Russian out 6-4, 6-3.
