Alec Baldwin Quits Latest Project
"The Devil and Daniel Webster," a remake of a 1941 film, is without its director after Alec Baldwin pulled out over unpaid bills.
Independent producer David Glasser, of Cutting Edge Entertainment, originally raised the $28 million that Alec Baldwin said he would need to make the film and noted that "there are some vendors who are still owed money because one investor pulled out." He went on to say that the shortage of cash was a "short lapse" that would soon be overcome. The film also stars Anthony Hopkins and Jennifer Love Hewitt, but must still go through final editing before it can be released.
Despite Glasser’s attempts at glossing over financial problems, it has been reported that Baldwin had to hire Hollywood attorney Marty Singer to secure payment for his work on the project. By the end of the filming process, he was owed $550,000, money that was not forthcoming until legal action was taken. In response, Glasser angrily noted that, "We agreed to finance it at $13 million because it was Alec’s passion piece. He came back and said it would be 15, then 17, then 24 and finally, $28 million. Alec has been paid in full, but he decided to point his finger at Cutting Edge. It’s the most insane thing I’ve ever heard."
But other sources close to the film, including set director Beth Kushnik, spoke in less-than-glowing terms about Cutting Edge. "Their business practices are not kosher. It was their job to make sure the money was there." Kushnik went on to say that Baldwin was a pleasure to work with and that she hoped the movie would be completed and eventually released.
