Crying Out to the Lord
"Little Willie: The Story of a favorite Goat"

During one of our floods several years ago, our son Bill had a herd of goats on some land by the bayou. As the bayou water began to rise and overflow its banks, some men saw Bill’s goats being overtaken by the flood and hoisted them up into the loft of a barn to keep them from drowning. By the next morning the water was like a rushing river—a mile wide—washing away uprooted trees and everything else in its path. Bill had, by this time, been told about his goats, and in spite of the road blocks and the rapids that were gushing by, he set out in an old tin bottom boat across those swift flood waters to rescue his little herd of goats. He knew in another few hours they would die from thirst and suffocation.

Little Willie, Bill’s favorite of all his goats, because of the time spent bottle feeding him, was the first cry Bill heard when he got close to the barn. And as one might expect, once he forced the loft door open amid the rushing waters, Little Willie was the first one to jump into his arms. Then, boat load by boat load, goat by goat, Bill was able to get every one of those goats down out of the loft and rowed to safety.

A television camera crew from Abilene, while filming the flood, caught sight of the little goat boy risking his life to rescue his goats. That became the news story of the day—making the news at six o’clock and again at ten. That is a heartwarming story, but every time I think of Bill rescuing those goats from danger, I think of how merciful God is to answer us when we sincerely CALL to Him for help.
