Cricket: Glamorgan Sign Ganguly
India skipper Sourav Ganguly has been enlisted into the depleted ranks of Glamorgan's midfield as they try to recover from their worst start in decades.
Glamorgan have reacted to their worst start to a season for 83 years by signing the India captain Sourav Ganguly to bolster their middle order.
He is due to make his debut against Sussex at Swansea next Wednesday and is available until the end of July. However his stay could be extended to mid-August if India's further appeal is unsuccessful against his six-match Test ban, imposed by the International Cricket Council for slow over rates.
"We wanted to sign someone who not only has a proven track record but who will be looked up to in the dressing-room," said the Glamorgan captain Robert Croft.
Ganguly's arrival dovetails perfectly with the anticipated retirement of Matthew Maynard, who is likely to be named an England assistant coach. The 39-year-old, who has not played for Glamorgan since April 17 because of pneumonia, will meet the England and Wales Cricket Board today with a view to formalising the role he fulfilled during part of the winter tour of South Africa.
If confirmed, it will bring to an end a 20-year career during which Maynard scored 24,799 first-class runs at an average of 42.53 with 59 centuries but won only four Test caps.
·Riki Wessels, the son of the Northamptonshire coach Kepler, scored his maiden first-class hundred against Somerset yesterday. Wessels, 19, added 185 for the fifth wicket with Martin Love (166) before falling for 102.
