I Won’t Cry

It is sad that children, as well as adults, can be so cruel. Early in life we learn to "build the wall."
Someone hurt my feelings today,
But I won’t cry! No, not I.
I am big and tough,
I am rough enough.
I won’t cry! No, not I.

What is this leaking down my face?
It can’t be tears! No, not I.
By myself, I am just fine,
These are not tears in a line.
I won’t cry! No, not I.

My teacher asks if I’m okay.
My voice is cracking when I say…
I won’t cry! No, not I.
She bends down and gives me a hug.
She makes me feel so warm and snug.
Now I don’t need to cry. No, not I.
