Sex and the City star, Cynthia Nixon, was arrested last week outside New York City Hall for protesting Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s proposal to cut funding for city schools. Nixon, along with 11 others, were taken into custody after ignoring police orders to stop blocking the sidewalk. Nixon was quoted as saying, "[The arrests] were pre-arranged. The police were very respectful. We were handcuffed, put in a paddy wagon and taken down to a station." Nixon, 36, was released and issued a summons to appear in court on June 19.
Nixon has a five-year old daughter, Samantha Mozes, who is in public school in Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Bloomberg proposed cuts of $350 million from schools this year. Nixon’s daughter’s school has been affected directly. There is not enough staff to handle the amount of children. After seeing what happened in her daughter’s school, Nixon teamed with the Alliance for Quality Education to help push for more school funding. They staged a sit-in blocking traffic in front of City Hall and urged the Mayor to raise taxes and push for more funds for the city’s Board of Education. It was reported that Bloomberg told a few state representatives that the proposed cuts most likely will not take place.
Nixon plays Miranda Hobbes, an attorney and single mother, on the HBO series. She was reportedly back on the set the day after her arrest. The fifth season slated to air in June has been pushed back to a July debut since production was halted after Sarah Jessica Parker announced her pregnancy. They resumed shooting last week, when it was decided not to incorporate the pregnancy in Carrie’s storyline.
