The son of radical Palestinian guerrilla leader Ahmed Jibril was killed today in a Beirut car bombing, a Lebanese television station reported.
Jihad Jibril, the 40-year-old son of the leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (LPGC), was killed in the bombing, according to Al-Manar, a television station which has close links to the Hezbollah guerrilla group.
Al-Manar said it had received confirmation of his murder from the LPGC's headquarters in Damascus, Syria. Jihad Jibril was head of military operations for the Palestinian faction, which is opposed not only to the existence of Israel but also to the Palestinian Authority and Yasser Arafat's leadership.
However, when contacted by the Associated Press, Mr Jibril's Damascus office would not provide immediate confirmation. His mother, Um Jihad, reached by telephone at her Damascus home was weeping and, asked if it was true, said "We are not sure yet."
