London was today named as one of five cities still in contention to host the 2012 Olympic Games.

At a press conference in Lausanne, Switzerland today, it was announced that London, Madrid, Moscow, New York and Paris would be considered.

That meant no place for Havana, Istanbul, Leipzig, and, surprisingly perhaps, Rio de Janeiro.

"We congratulate the candidate cities," said the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Jacques Rogge, "and thank those who have been competing."

The five cities that remain in the running will now have to submit detailed plans of their proposals to the IOC by November.
