Cone will start Thursday

Despite leading the American League East and having one of the best records in baseball, pitching is not exactly what the Boston Red Sox have been know for this season. The Red Sox made an announcement to try to change their pitching fortunes on Sunday, as they stated that free agent signee David Cone will be starting for them on Thursday.

The Red Sox, who beat out the Texas Rangers to acquire the right handerĀ's services, signed Cone as a free agent. The Red Sox stated that they were hopeful that the former Cy Young winner could recapture his past glory, however he hurt his shoulder during spring training.

In his latest rehab start for the Red Sox, Cone pitched four innings, allowing 0 runs and 2 hits, while striking out 6. The Red Sox stated on Sunday that Cone would be making his first start on Thursday against the Minnesota Twins. Team sources state that they feel Cone is ready to pitch effectively again.

The Red Sox also stated that they planned to add Tim Wakefield and Hipolito Pichardo to the starting rotation this week. In order to do that, they optioned Paxton Crawford and Tomo Ohka to Triple A following their Sunday game. Sources state that they believe the changes will help the Red Sox starting rotation immensely.

Cone is a career 179-110 pitcher with a 3.37 earned run average and 2,410 strikeouts. Cone is hoping to rebound from a season that saw him lose ten straight decisions at one point. For the year, Cone was a miserable 4-14 with a 6.91 ERA. He was also left off the Yankees post season pitching rotation, as he was forced to work from the bullpen.

Despite being 22-15 and a division leader, the Red Sox pitching has been underrated for much of the season. BostonĀ's arms currently lead the league with a 3.32 ERA. The Red Sox have also allowed the fewest hits, home runs, and walks and they currently own the lowest WHIP ratio in the Major Leagues.

The Red Sox stated on Sunday that despite their impressive numbers this season, they feel the moves they made will help improve the pitching staff even more. With a great offense already, if the pitching continues this way, the Red Sox may be a serious threat for October baseball.
