Eddie Van Halen Cancer Free
Eddie Van Halen, who battled tongue cancer, wrote on the band's web site that he has been cleared by doctors of cancer.
"I know I promised I'd get back to you and I'm sorry for the delay but I wanted to let you all know that I've just gotten a hundred percent clean bill of health - from head to toe," Eddie Van Halen wrote on the website, Van-Halen.com. Van Halen, who is a recovering alcoholic and smoker, had hip replacement surgery in 1999.
It has been speculated that the reason Van Halen has not toured lately is partly because of Eddie Van Halen's health. Another reason would be because they are without a singer and a label. David Lee Roth was the original frontman for the band. He was replaced by Sammy Hagar who was in turn replaced by Gary Cherone, formerly of Extreme. Cherone left the band after only one album, Van Halen 3, released in 1998. Earlier this year, the band was dropped by their label, Warner Bros.
Roth and Hagar are preparing for their summer tour, which gets underway in Cleveland on May 29. As reported on Eonline.com, Hagar told Rockline that the Van Halen brothers were approached about a tour with both their former singers. They rejected the idea. Hagar said, "I think if they could do anything right now they would have done it. No one has heard anything, they don't have a record deal, and they've just fallen completely apart. Why, I don't know. I think it's the worst thing that could have ever happened to one of the greatest rock bands in the world."
