Roses have become and integral part of our culture as a way to express affection. Each year lovers spend millions of dollars on roses. Entire holiday are centered on giving roses to our loved ones. The Kentucky derby is the most recognized horse race in the sport. In that race roses have become a cultural icon for victory. Though horse racing is becoming more of a niche sport it is a testament to the cultural significance of roses.

A rose can have so many different meanings and emotions connected with them that some bands use roses in the name of the band. The emotional appeal of roses is obvious. However, less obvious are the undertones of the symbol. Roses can also symbolize some of the darker emotions like sorrow and death. With so many emotional underpinnings roses make a perfect part of the identity of a band because the emotional meaning is flexible and moldable to whatever image they want to portray.
