Yellowstone National Park: A Magical Playground with a Magical Effect

While it is a wildly popular tourist destination in the summer, there is easily as much to see and enjoy in Yellowstone National Park in the frigid winter months.
One of the main advantages to seeing Yellowstone in the winter is precisely because it is not so crowded - with only 1/5 as many tourists making the winter trek - as it is in summer. The serenity of its natural wonders can be appreciated all the more at such a time of the year. Furthermore, there are great many things to see and enjoy specifically in the winter months.

For the avid cross-country skier or snowmobiler, Yellowstone in winter is a magical playground of wide open spaces and natural splendor. With an average snowfall of over 10 feet, it is not difficult to imagine how much Yellowstone in winter differs from the Summer-time imagery that most people have of the park. The brisk winter air makes the skies a beautiful, clear blue, the steaming geothermally-fed springs and rivers of Yellowstone have a magical effect in winter and there is the delightful feeling of being in the middle of nowhere when in Yellowstone at this time of year.

Of course, since it is such a major tourist attraction, there is no shortage of amenities to make a winter stay at Yellowstone a pleasant one. The accommodations, particularly the Old Faithful Snow Lodge, are charming, the skiing, hiking and snowmobiling paths are well-marked and the workers in the park are well-informed about everything that this magical place has to offer. So, if you can stand the cold (no small feat, to be sure), then you may wish to consider seeing a side of Yellowstone that few people see: its quiet winter charm.
