Boxing: Us Move for More Safety and Image Makeover

United States senators have voted to set up a national boxing commission to oversee the sport in an effort to improve its image in the US.

The commission would have responsibility for licensing boxers, trainers, managers and promoters and would aim to improve standards of health provision for fighters.

John McCain, the Arizona senator who has long campaigned to clean up the sport, is sponsoring the legislation which has still to go before the House of Representatives. However, it is thought that its passage will be a formality.

Boxing in the US currently comes under the jurisdiction of various state athletic commissions, with Nevada perceived as setting the highest standards.

Once the new commission begins its work, a nationwide ban could more easily be implemented and rogue states will be compelled to follow safety guidelines.

The World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation are among those opposing McCain's campaign saying that medical personnel and ambulances are not necessary at all boxing events.
