Reality TV Channel
Reality Central, a new cable network dedicated to reality programming twenty-four hours a day, is in the works for 2004.
There is a comedy channel, a music channel, a channel for women, a sports channel…why not a reality channel? For those of you who thought reality TV’s fifteen minutes were up – think again. CBS’ The Amazing Race 2’s Blake Mycoskie is joining arms with cable industry veteran Larry Namer to create Reality Central, which will only feature reality programming twenty-four hours a day, all day, every day. There are those out there that crave reality TV like some people crave chocolate and Mycoskie and Namer are banking on that fact. They have drummed up $25 million to get the network on the air by early 2004.
Reality Central will offer re-runs of all the reality shows as well as new programs focusing on current reality hits. There will be a reality news show that focuses on ratings, casting info, and gossip. Former reality show contestants will be featured in where-are-they-now segments, and foreign reality shows will be aired, as well a series showing the making of Reality Central. The dynamic duo, Mycoskie and Namer, seem very confident that there is a "hunger" for more reality television. Mycoskie was quoted as saying, "We know people have an unquenchable desire for these shows and to know more about the people on them."
Reality Central doesn’t seem any more ridiculous than MTV, Comedy Central, or The Cartoon Network. Time will tell how long the reality craze will keep people tuning in.
Some program ideas could be Island Cooking on a Budget with Richard Hatch, Relationship Tips from the Cast of Temptation Island, How to Date Multiple Women at Once with Alex, Aaron and Andrew, or How to Marry and Divorce a Millionaire in a Matter of Days with Darva Conger.
