Cycling: American Rider in Coma After Finishing-line Crash

A pile-up on the finish line in the Circuit de la Sarthe race has left American rider Saul Raisin in a critical coma.
Saul Raisin was in a critical coma yesterday after a pile-up on the finish line in the Circuit de la Sarthe race. The 23-year-old American suffered severe head injuries and yesterday his condition deteriorated, requiring an urgent operation.

Another crash victim this week, Britain's Roger Hammond will start Sunday's Paris-Roubaix Classic in spite of a serious fall last weekend in the Tour of Flanders one-day event that left him needing 14 stitches in a deep gash in his knee.

"When you look down and see your shinbone exposed you are not over hopeful, but I've been training and it is holding up," said the West London rider, who finished third in the event in 2004.
